There are few things in life as comforting as a proper pie. Not a pie with a pastry lid plonked on top of a filling — a real pie, with pastry on all sides, that holds its shape when you cut into it and floods the plate with proper gravy. The Stag in Salhouse does exactly this, every Thursday, for £12. It is one of the best value meals in Norfolk.
The Setting
The Stag is a beautifully renovated 400-year-old pub in the village of Salhouse, just a short drive from Norwich and close to Salhouse Broad. Under its current owners, it's been transformed into one of the most appealing pubs in the area — warm, welcoming and with a kitchen that clearly cares about what it sends out.
Head Chef Luc Breji runs a daily-changing specials menu alongside the pub classics, sourcing from trusted local suppliers — including their own on-site butchery. This commitment to quality shows in everything on the plate.
Thursday Pie Night
Every Thursday, The Stag runs its famous Pie Night. The choices rotate — we had steak and ale, and chicken, bacon and mushroom — with a vegan option always available. Each pie comes with proper mash and gravy for £12. At that price, it's almost unreasonably good value.
The steak and ale pie was outstanding — the pastry properly short and crumbly, the filling rich and deeply flavoured with genuinely tender beef. The chicken, bacon and mushroom was lighter but no less satisfying. The mash was buttery and smooth. The gravy was the real thing — dark, rich and clearly made with proper stock.
The Atmosphere
On a Thursday evening in autumn, the pub was warm, busy and full of the sound of people genuinely enjoying themselves. Log fire crackling. Locals at the bar. Families at the bigger tables. It felt exactly like a proper local pub should feel — which is rarer than you'd think.
The Verdict
The Stag on a Thursday is one of our favourite evenings out in Norfolk. The pie is genuinely excellent, the value is outstanding and the atmosphere is exactly what you want when the weather turns cold. This is comfort food done properly, in a pub that clearly loves what it does.
